Singing in the Spirit

“… I will sing with the Spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.” 1 Corinthians 14:14-15

Singing in the spirit is something that most of us, if asked, would say is in us, but we just need “permission” to let it out. There is a song inside of every person- it’s the Song of the Lord, the song that He put there.

In Psalm 149, the psalmist lays out the “order” in which God desires and has designed “sung worship” to flow out of. That song, is the cry of the human heart to connect with God, our Maker, our Creator, and find our place in “The Story” of the ages.

That story is like a love song, a love song that our hearts know very well, and our minds are trying to learn. The song goes like this:

(Jesus) “Come and see how beautiful I am, come and enjoy me.”

(Us) “Jesus, You are so beautiful. Thank You for sharing Yourself with me, allowing me to see Your beauty. Your beauty is transforming everything in me. My thoughts, my emotions, my desires. You are beautiful. You are worthy. Highest Praises belong to You!”

(Jesus) “Stay with Me, abide in Me, stay connected to Me, and I will take care of everything else. Don’t turn away, don’t lose focus, keep Your eyes on Me, and I will show you wondrous things.”

(Us) “I will stay with You. I will trust You. Being with You is my highest good.”

He invites us to be with Him, when we say “yes”, we are now open to seeing all He has to show us. It shifts our focus. Our song begins with saying “yes” and singing back what He is saying and what He is doing.

Begin singing today. Sing about what He has done, what He has promised to do, and about His glorious character and nature He has revealed about Himself through His Word. As you begin to sing to Him in this way (and not just about Him) watch what happens inside your heart. Start singing in the Spirit with your prayer language (tongues) and then begin to sing a passage of scripture to Him. Let your heart connect to the Lord God, your Maker.

“Sing to the Lord a new song!... For the Lord takes pleasure in His people; He will beautify the humble with salvation. Let the saints be joyful in glory. Let them sing aloud on their beds. Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and the two edge sword in their hand…” Psalm 149:1-6
