Among Christians and the secular world, the word "law" has become taboo, evil, or grey at best. If people love rules, they are called "legalists". If people cling to spiritual disciplines, they are categorized "religious" in a negative connotation. But there is something special, almost mystical, about loving the law of God.
When I was in college I had just been saved a short time, and clung to every little thing I was learning about God. I had a roommate that played this CD of “meditation scripture songs”. Those songs today, are etched in my heart. One in particular, “I will delight in the law of the Lord, I will meditate day and night…” everytime I think of it I am taken back to my first days in love with Jesus. Being raised Catholic, I had a heathy appreciation for all things liturgical, so it felt right to love the law of God, whatever that meant! (Cause I had no idea!)
Last year I began meditating again on some of these passages, and in song, came an unfolding of another layer of revelation to the goodness of His laws.
“Blessed are those whose ways are blameless,
who walk according to the law of the Lord.
Blessed are those who keep his statutes
and seek him with all their heart—
they do no wrong
but follow his ways.
You have laid down precepts
that are to be fully obeyed.
Oh, that my ways were steadfast
in obeying your decrees!
Then I would not be put to shame
when I consider all your commands.
I will praise you with an upright heart
as I learn your righteous laws.
I will obey your decrees;
do not utterly forsake me.”
I saw in a vision the cross, the blood of Jesus in front of me. Then it was completely pulled back away from me, and I saw a scroll, like in a Jewish synagogue, a giant Torah scroll, and I saw the blood on it. I saw that the commands of God, the command for blood sacrifice, was a law set in place that would be the key to let us out of the prison of death, eternal separation from God.
If there were no laws, then there would be no demand to be met. If there be no demand to be met, we would never be able to have confidence that we really are saved, free from hell, death, and the grave. Because there is the law, Jesus’ blood could be the price. His blood wouldn’t have mattered if the law for blood had not been set in place. If I do not love the law, I do not love freedom. If I do not delight in the law, I do not delight in all the Father has done to reach me, to save me. If I do not delight in the law of God, I reject the extravagant lengths He has gone through to demonstrate His love for mankind.
“Blessed is the man
Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,
Nor stands in the path of sinners,
Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
But his delight is in the law of the Lord,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
He shall be like a tree
Planted by the rivers of water,
That brings forth its fruit in its season,
Whose leaf also shall not wither;
And whatever he does shall prosper.”
I hope you’ll enjoy this song. It’s a simple song that I believe will help us cling to His laws! Download it free on soundcloud.
